The Ranger is TBH's most reliable free damage dealer. It doesn't have the Hunter's elemental burst or the Sorcerer's AoE devastation - but it never stops shooting, and those arrows add up. Attack Speed is the Ranger's god stat: it scales multiplicatively with Rapid Fire, crit chance, and everything else the Ranger does. A well-built Ranger turns into a machine gun that fills the screen with damage numbers. The tradeoff is fragility - 60 base HP means the Ranger needs the Knight to tank and the Priest to heal.

What It Does
Rapid Fire
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Dramatically increases attack speed for a duration. The Ranger's signature skill and highest DPS multiplier. Max this first. With high base Attack Speed, Rapid Fire turns the Ranger into a damage hose.
Arrow Rain
⭐⭐⭐⭐
AoE damage against dense mob waves. One point is enough for wave clearing. More points if you want it as a secondary damage source.
Piercing Arrow
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Single-target burst that penetrates through enemies. Excellent for boss stages where you need to burn down a single target. Max after Rapid Fire.
Swift Surge
⭐⭐⭐
Movement and attack speed buff. Good utility for repositioning and extra DPS uptime. One to three points is enough.
Scatter Shot
⭐⭐
Cone AoE in front of the Ranger. Decent for wave clearing but Arrow Rain covers this role better. Optional.
Skewer Shot
⭐⭐
High single-target damage with armor penetration. Situational - good against high-armor bosses. Max last.

Why
1
Attack Speed
8
The Ranger's core stat. Faster attacks = more Rapid Fire procs = more crits = more kills. Scales multiplicatively with everything.
2
Critical Chance
8
With high Attack Speed, you roll crit checks constantly. Higher crit chance compounds exponentially.
3
Critical Damage
8
150% base Crit Damage is the highest among free classes. Stacking more crit damage multiplies your total DPS.
4
Projectile Damage
5
Directly increases all bow attack damage. Additive with Attack Damage but a separate multiplier pool.
5
Attack Damage
8
Flat damage increase. Important but less impactful than speed and crit because it's additive with gear stats.
6
Dodge Chance
5
Survivability option. Invest after all offensive passives are maxed.
Breakpoint to know: At 25% Crit Chance with 150% Crit Damage and Rapid Fire active, roughly one in four arrows crits for 1.5× damage. At 40% Crit Chance (achievable with gear), the Ranger crits almost every other attack. This is where the Ranger's damage becomes genuinely scary.

Second priority. More crits = more crit damage procs.
Critical Damage
Max (8)
Third. Multiplies your crit value.
Projectile Damage
Max (5)
Direct bow damage boost.
Attack Damage
Max (8)
After speed and crit are established.
Rapid Fire
Max (5)

Piercing Arrow
Max (5)
Boss killer. Max after Rapid Fire.
Arrow Rain
1–3 pts
One point for wave clear. More if AoE is needed.
Dodge Chance
Max (5)
Last priority. Survivability after all damage is done.
Priest + Ranger + Sorcerer - No tank, maximum damage. Only viable with micromanagement. High risk.
Ranger vs Hunter - Free vs Paid DPS
The most common question from Ranger players: "Should I buy the Hunter DLC?" The answer depends on what you value.
Ranger (Free)
Hunter (~$4 DLC)
Damage Type
Physical only
Fire / Cold / Lightning (elemental flexibility)
Damage Pattern
Consistent sustained DPS
Burst damage with combo mechanics
Best For
Long AFK sessions - consistent output over hours
Active play - Frost→Explosive combos require timing
Weakness
Hits a wall against physical-resistant enemies
Low HP, combo-dependent, needs player attention
AFK Value
Excellent - fire and forget, arrows never stop
Good but underperforms without active combo management
Cost
Free
~$4 (one-time, permanent unlock)
Bottom line: The Ranger is the better AFK farmer. The Hunter is the better boss killer and active-play class. If you leave the game running while you work or sleep, the Ranger's consistency beats the Hunter's burst. If you actively play and want to push progression milestones, the Hunter's $4 is well spent. Many veteran players keep both - Ranger for overnight farming, Hunter for pushing new content.
Common Ranger Mistakes
Stacking Attack Speed before Crit Chance. Attack Speed is the Ranger's best stat, but only if you have the Crit to back it up. More arrows at low crit rates just means more non-crit hits. We target 25%+ Crit Chance before pushing Attack Speed past its first breakpoint. Once Crit is online, Attack Speed scales multiplicatively and the damage skyrockets.
Ignoring Piercing Arrow for wave clear. Rapid Fire is the Ranger's signature skill and gets most of the attention, but Piercing Arrow hits enemies in a line - including off-screen targets. On dense stages, we found Piercing Arrow accounts for 30-40% of the Ranger's total damage because it hits targets before they even appear on screen. Do not skip it.
Not respecting the HP gap. 60 base HP means the Ranger dies to 2-3 hits in Hell+. We learned to invest in Max HP passives and gear stats earlier than most guides recommend - a dead Ranger deals zero DPS. In our builds, we take Max HP to at least level 4 before maxing Attack Damage.
