We have tested every comp on this list through Torment difficulty. The pattern is clear: Knight and Priest together are the foundation of every viable endgame team. Your third slot is the only real choice. All no-Knight and no-Priest comps hit an insurmountable wall at Hell difficulty - we wiped 15+ times testing them so you don't have to.

Best Free Team: Knight + Priest + Ranger

SlotHeroRoleKey Stats
1 (Left)KnightTankMax HP, Defense, Block Chance
2 (Middle)RangerPhysical DPSAttack Speed, Crit Chance, Attack Damage
3 (Right)PriestHealer/BufferCooldown Reduction, Skill Heal, Max HP

Why it works: This is the most stable farming comp in the game. Knight absorbs all frontline damage. Priest provides permanent 90% attack buff and healing. Ranger delivers consistent, uninterrupted physical DPS from the backline with zero downtime - no cooldown problems, no elemental resistance issues, just steady damage output hour after hour. This comp clears Torment reliably with proper gear and is the best choice for overnight AFK farming where consistency matters more than burst damage.

Weakness: All-physical damage means physical-resistant enemies slow you down. Lower damage ceiling than Hunter comps - clear speeds are 15-25% slower on boss stages.

Free AoE Alternative: Knight + Priest + Sorcerer

SlotHeroRoleKey Stats
1 (Left)KnightTankMax HP, Defense, Block Chance
2 (Middle)SorcererElemental AoE DPSSkill Damage, Cooldown Reduction, Crit
3 (Right)PriestHealer/BufferCooldown Reduction, Skill Heal, Max HP

Why it works: Sorcerer clears mob waves faster than any free class. Fireball, Ice Orb, Lightning, and Meteor Strike cover three elements - you always have the right damage type for enemy weaknesses. On dense stages with many small enemies, this comp out-farms the Ranger comp by 20-30% in terms of kills per hour.

Weakness: Sorcerer's HP is the lowest in the game (50 base). Needs significantly better gear on both the Sorcerer and Priest to survive Hell+. Cooldown-dependent - damage drops between skill cycles. If your Sorcerer dies, clear speed plummets to near zero. We recommend this comp for active play where you can monitor deaths, not for unattended overnight farming.

Budget Premium: Knight + Priest + Hunter (~$4)

SlotHeroRoleKey Stats
1 (Left)KnightTankMax HP, Defense, Block Chance
2 (Middle)HunterElemental Burst DPSSkill Damage, Crit Damage, Cooldown
3 (Right)PriestHealer/BufferCooldown Reduction, Skill Heal, Max HP

Why it works: Hunter has the highest damage ceiling in TBH. Frost Bolt freezes, Explosive Bolt detonates for massive burst damage. Shock Bolt covers Lightning for the full elemental triangle. With three damage types on one hero, Hunter never hits a resistance wall. This comp kills bosses 30-40% faster than the Ranger comp and is the best setup for pushing progression milestones.

Weakness: Costs ~$4 real money. Hunter's burst damage pattern underperforms in AFK mode because the Frost-Explosive combo timing matters more than raw stats - the AI does not optimize the combo as well as a human player. For overnight AFK farming, the free Ranger comp often earns more total gold and items because consistency beats burst over 8+ hours. Hunter is the best class for active play and boss killing, but not necessarily the best for passive income.

Full Premium: Knight + Hunter + Slayer (~$8)

SlotHeroRoleKey Stats
1 (Left)KnightTankMax HP, Defense, Block Chance
2 (Middle)HunterElemental Burst DPSSkill Damage, Crit Damage, Cooldown
3 (Right)SlayerMelee DPS / Off-TankAttack Damage, HP per Kill, Crit Chance

Why it works: Double premium DPS with Hunter's elemental burst and Slayer's melee sustain creates the highest raw damage output possible. Slayer's self-healing through HP Per Kill passives means it rarely needs Priest attention. Both DLC heroes are individually stronger than their free counterparts.

Critical weakness: No Priest. This comp has zero in-combat healing. Slayer's self-sustain keeps itself alive but does nothing for Knight or Hunter. This comp works on Normal and Nightmare where enemies die before they deal significant damage. On Hell difficulty, elemental DoT effects stack and wipe your backline within 10-15 minutes. On Torment, you die on the first wave. We tested this extensively and cannot recommend it for any content past Nightmare unless you are actively micromanaging every fight. If you want to spend $8 on TBH, buy Hunter + Priest DLC pack, not Hunter + Slayer.

Can You Skip the Priest?

DifficultyNo-Priest ViabilityDetails
NormalViableEnemies die fast enough. Any comp works.
NightmareRiskyPossible with well-geared Knight + double self-sustain DPS (Slayer). Party wipes become common past Act 2.
HellNot viableElemental DoT requires party-wide healing. Sanctuary is the only counter. No Priest = cannot farm Hell.
TormentImpossibleWithout Priest healing and Blessing of Might buff, even a maxed Knight dies in under a minute.

The Priest is not optional for endgame content. Every comp we tested without a Priest failed at Hell difficulty regardless of how much we spent on gear or DLC classes. The Priest is free - claim it from the Steam store. There is no excuse for not having one.

Positioning Guide for Every Comp

SlotPositionBest ClassWhy
1Far LeftKnight (always)Tanks frontline damage. Must be in slot 1.
2MiddleDPS (Ranger/Sorcerer/Hunter)Safe from backline-targeting AI in Hell+. Maximum DPS uptime.
3Far RightPriest (always)In Hell+, enemies target slot 3 first. Priest must be here with enough HP to survive the initial volley.

The positioning rules change at Hell difficulty. Below Hell, position does not matter much - enemies attack randomly. At Hell and above, the enemy AI prioritizes the rightmost slot. This means your Priest absorbs the first wave of attacks. If Priest dies, Knight loses healing, then Knight dies, then your DPS folds. The Priest must have enough Max HP and Defense to survive the Hell+ backline targeting. This single positioning rule is the difference between stable farming and your party wiping 10 minutes into every session.

Which Should You Use?

Your SituationRecommended CompWhy
New player, first weekKnight + Priest + Ranger (Free)Zero cost, most stable, easiest to build. Cannot go wrong.
Overnight AFK farmerKnight + Priest + Ranger (Free)Consistency over 8+ hours beats burst damage. Ranger's sustained output is ideal for unattended farming.
Active player pushing progressionKnight + Priest + Hunter (~$4)Highest damage ceiling. Best boss killer. Worth the $4 if you actively manage your comp.
Budget-conscious, wants varietyKnight + Priest + Sorcerer (Free)Different playstyle from Ranger. Better on mob-dense maps. Free.
Wants to spend on DLCBuy Hunter first, Slayer optionalHunter provides the biggest single-class upgrade. Slayer is good but not essential. Trade Ship DLC (+5 market slots) has better ROI than Slayer.
The most important thing we learned testing every comp: your third slot matters far less than you think. Knight + Priest is 80% of your team's power. Whether your third is Ranger, Sorcerer, Hunter, or Slayer determines the remaining 20%. Do not overthink the third slot. Pick the one that fits your budget and playstyle, and invest your energy in gearing your Knight and Priest properly. A well-geared Knight + Priest with a mediocre DPS will outperform a poorly geared Knight + Priest with a maxed Hunter every single time.
