Chests Only Drop in AFK Mode
TBH has two ways to progress while you're not actively playing, and they are not the same thing. AFK mode means the game is running — it can be minimized to your taskbar, running behind other windows, or on a second monitor. Offline mode means the game is completely closed. The difference: chests and gear drops only happen in AFK mode. Offline mode gives you gold and XP only — zero items, zero chests, zero Steam Market income.
| AFK Mode (Game Running) | Offline Mode (Game Closed) | |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | Yes — continuous | Yes — accumulated, claimed on login |
| XP | Yes — continuous | Yes — accumulated, claimed on login |
| Chest Drops | Yes — normal drop rates | No — zero chests |
| Gear Drops | Yes — from chests | No — zero gear |
| Material Drops | Yes — from chests | No — zero materials |
| Steam Market Income | Yes — items to sell | No — nothing to sell |
What You Lose in Offline Mode
Offline mode accumulates gold and XP based on your highest cleared stage and current party power. When you log back in, you claim the accumulated rewards. Offline accumulation is capped at 8 hours by default — the Offline Time rune nodes in the Convenience branch extend this cap by ~2 hours per node.
What you permanently miss in offline mode:
- All chest drops (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary — all of them)
- All gear that would have dropped from those chests
- All materials (soulstones, gems, ores, essences, coins)
- All pet kill progress (no kills = no pet unlocks)
- All Steam Market income from selling drops
How to Optimize AFK Mode for Maximum Drops
- Keep the game running 24/7 if possible. Minimize it to the taskbar — that's literally the game's namesake. A minimized TBH is a fully functional TBH.
- Unlock Auto-Open Chests in the Rune Tree (Convenience branch). Without this, chests pile up unopened and you hit the chest cap, wasting drops. Auto-Open is mandatory for AFK play.
- Unlock Bag Expansion. More inventory space = longer uninterrupted AFK sessions. When your bag fills up, you stop receiving items.
- Farm at a difficulty where your party never wipes. A dead party earns nothing. If your party has a 10% chance to die each hour, you lose ~2.4 hours of farming per day to deaths. Drop down a difficulty tier if needed.
- Run the game on a second monitor or keep it minimized. The game uses minimal system resources when minimized — it's designed for this.
When Offline Mode Is Actually Better
There are legitimate reasons to use offline mode:
- Your computer is turned off. Offline accumulation still works based on your last state.
- You're traveling without your PC. Offline rewards accumulate for up to 8 hours (extendable with runes).
- You need to restart or update your PC. The accumulated offline rewards are better than nothing.
But if your PC is on and you have screen space — keep the game running. The item drops you get from AFK mode are worth far more than the gold and XP from offline mode.
The Biggest AFK Myth
Some players believe that minimizing the game reduces drop rates compared to having it visible on screen. This is false. TBH's drop system does not care whether the game window is visible, minimized, or behind other windows. As long as the game process is running and your heroes are fighting, drop rates are identical. The game's name — Task Bar Hero — is literal: it's designed to live in your taskbar.
