Rune Tree Overview

The Rune Tree is TBH's permanent upgrade system — a tech tree with 197 nodes spread across 6 branches. Every node you purchase provides a permanent bonus that applies to all your heroes, all the time, for the rest of your account's existence. Rune bonuses are class-agnostic: a Knight, Priest, and Hunter all benefit equally. Gold is the currency, and gold is not scarce in TBH — your heroes farm it continuously. The question isn't "can I afford this node?" but "what should I buy first?"

The Golden Rule

Utility > Defense > Offense. A hero slot is worth more than any stat node. Auto-Open Chests is worth more than +5% Attack. Fix your quality of life first, then scale your stats.

This rule exists because TBH is an idle game. Your heroes farm while you're not looking. A +10% Attack node helps for the few seconds you're watching. Auto-Open Chests helps for the 23 hours and 59 minutes you're not. Quality-of-life upgrades compound over time in ways that stat upgrades never can.

The Exact 9-Step Unlock Priority

OrderNodeBranchCostWhy First
12nd Hero SlotUtility5,000 GoldTwo heroes > one hero. The single biggest power spike in the game. Unlock in your first 30 minutes.
23rd Hero SlotUtility150,000 GoldThree heroes complete your party. Your first major gold goal. ~10 hours of farming.
3Auto-Open ChestsConvenienceVariesWithout this, chests pile up unopened — you literally lose loot while AFK. Mandatory for idle play.
4Bag ExpansionConvenienceVariesMore inventory space = longer AFK sessions without wasted drops. Each expansion is worth the gold.
5Offline Time +ConvenienceVariesExtends the base 8-hour offline cap. Each node adds ~2 hours. Crucial for overnight farming.
6Exp BoostConvenienceVariesLevels = skill points. More XP = faster power growth for all heroes simultaneously.
7Gold Drop RateEconomyVariesMore gold = faster rune progression. This node pays for itself and then keeps paying forever.
8Item Drop RateEconomyVariesMore drops = more gear to sell on Steam Market or alchemize for gold. High long-term ROI.
9+Attack / Defense nodesAttack/Defense1M+Now that QoL and economy are handled, scale stats. Attack for faster farming speed, Defense for pushing higher difficulties.

All 6 Branches Explained

1. Utility Branch — Highest Priority

Key nodes: Hero slots, skill slots, formation slots. Hero slots are the single best investment in the entire game. The 4th hero slot is expensive but enables advanced compositions (Knight + Priest + Hunter + Slayer).

2. Convenience Branch — Highest Priority (After Hero Slots)

Key nodes: Auto-Open Chests, Bag Expansion, Offline Time, Exp Boost. These are quality-of-life features disguised as rune nodes. Auto-Open Chests is effectively mandatory for idle play — without it, unopened chests represent lost loot every hour you're AFK.

3. Economy Branch — Medium-High Priority

Key nodes: Gold Drop Rate, Item Drop Rate, Chest Quality. Gold Drop Rate should be invested early — it accelerates all future rune purchases. Item Drop Rate directly increases your Steam Market income. These nodes pay for themselves over time.

4. Special Branch (Awakening) — Medium Priority

Key nodes: Skill slot unlocks, awakening bonuses. The Rune of Awakening (50,000 Gold) is the crown jewel — it gives every hero a second active skill slot, fundamentally changing each class's combat capabilities. More skill slots = more active abilities equipped.

5. Attack Branch — Low Priority (Invest After QoL)

Stats: Attack Power, Crit Rate, Crit Damage, Attack Speed. ~35 nodes, gold cost from 1M to 50M+ for the full branch. Invest after all QoL and Economy nodes are comfortable. Attack speeds up farming but does nothing for you while you're AFK.

6. Defense Branch — Low Priority (Invest When Dying)

Stats: HP, Armor, Resistance, HP Regen. ~35 nodes, gold cost from 1M to 50M+. Invest when your party is dying too often during idle farming. Enough defense to survive > more attack. A dead party earns nothing.

Rune of Awakening

EffectEvery hero can equip a second active skill
When to BuyAfter 3-hero party is stable and Auto-Open Chests is unlocked

The Rune of Awakening is a game-changing node. Before it, each hero has one active skill — you choose between damage, defense, or utility. After it, every hero gets two actives, fundamentally transforming how each class plays. The Knight can run Aegis Field + Retribution Strike simultaneously. The Priest can run Blessing of Might + Heal. The Ranger can run Rapid Fire + Piercing Arrow. This 50,000 Gold investment effectively doubles your party's active skill options.

The full Rune Tree (197 nodes) costs an enormous amount of gold. By the time you have enough gold for this, you'll have naturally completed almost every other achievement through the farming required. It's typically the last Steam achievement players earn.
